Bedroom Air and Sleep: CO2, Humidity, and What a Purifier Cannot Fix
Most people who take their sleep seriously have thought about light, temperature and noise. Almost nobody thinks about the air. Yet you spend a third of your life breathing the air in one small room, usually with the door shut, often with another person, and the quality of that air changes a great deal between the moment you turn the light off and the moment you wake up.
This is the part of the bedroom audit that people skip. It is also one of the cheapest to fix.
Carbon dioxide: the one that builds up overnight
Every breath you exhale adds carbon dioxide to the room. Outdoor air sits at roughly 420 parts per million. In a closed bedroom with two people sleeping, that number commonly climbs past 1,000 within a couple of hours, and it can pass 2,000 by morning.
Carbon dioxide at those levels is not dangerous. It is not a poisoning risk and nobody should panic about a monitor reading. But it is not neutral either. Controlled studies from Denmark and the Netherlands, in which researchers changed nothing except bedroom ventilation, found that nights with lower carbon dioxide produced better sleep quality ratings and better concentration the following day. The effect is modest rather than dramatic. It is also real, and fixing it usually costs nothing.
If you have ever woken with a heavy head in a stuffy room and felt better the moment you opened a window, you have already run this experiment on yourself.
Humidity: the dentist's angle
Humidity is where my own profession comes in, because dry air shows up in the mouth.
When bedroom air is very dry, the nose and throat dry out, the nasal passages get irritated, and people drift toward breathing through the mouth. Mouth breathing dries things further, worsens snoring, and leaves you with the dry, sticky morning mouth that is bad news for your teeth and gums. Too much humidity causes the opposite problem. Dust mites and mold both thrive in damp air, and both are common triggers for the nasal congestion that pushes people into mouth breathing in the first place.
Roughly 40 to 50 percent relative humidity is the sweet spot: moist enough to keep your airway comfortable, dry enough to discourage mites and mold. A cheap hygrometer will tell you where you are. In a dry winter climate, a humidifier helps. In a damp one, a dehumidifier does.
Particles and allergens: the congestion problem
The biggest allergen in most bedrooms is not in the air at all until you move. It lives in the mattress, the pillows and the bedding, where dust mites feed on shed skin. Their droppings are the allergen, and every time you roll over you stir them up.
If you wake congested and clear up an hour after getting out of bed, suspect your bedding before you suspect anything else. The fixes are unglamorous and effective: allergen proof covers on the mattress and pillows, bedding washed hot every week at 130 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, and pets out of the bedroom if you are sensitive to them.
Congestion matters for sleep far more than people realize, because a blocked nose is one of the most common roots of snoring. If snoring is part of your picture, read snoring, when it is harmless and when it is a red flag as well.
What an air purifier can and cannot do
This is the single most useful thing in this article, and it surprises nearly everyone.
An air purifier does not remove carbon dioxide. It does not add oxygen or make a stuffy room fresh. A purifier filters particles, and some models also trap odors and chemical fumes. That is genuinely useful for allergens, dust, smoke and pet dander. It does nothing whatsoever for the carbon dioxide that builds up from breathing. Only fresh air does that.
So a purifier running in a sealed bedroom can give you cleaner air that is still stale. People buy one to fix a stuffy room, feel no different, and conclude the whole category is a gimmick. It is not a gimmick. It was solving a different problem.
If you do buy one, a few things matter:
- True HEPA filtration. This is the technology with the strongest evidence behind it. It captures the overwhelming majority of fine particles.
- Sized for the room. Look for a clean air delivery rate, usually shown as CADR, of at least two thirds of the room's floor area in square feet.
- Quiet enough to sleep beside. A purifier you switch off because of the noise does nothing.
- No ozone. Some ionizers and so called ozone generators release ozone, which irritates the lungs, and the evidence behind ionization in general is thinner than for HEPA. If a model uses ionization, look for CARB certification, which limits ozone output.
One more myth worth retiring. The idea that a few houseplants will clean your bedroom air comes from a NASA study run in small sealed chambers. It does not translate to real rooms. A 2019 analysis estimated you would need an absurd number of plants per square meter to match what ordinary ventilation already does. Keep the plants because you like them.
How to measure it
You do not need a lab. Two inexpensive instruments will tell you most of what you need to know.
A carbon dioxide monitor with an NDIR sensor. This detail matters. Many cheap air quality gadgets do not measure carbon dioxide at all; they estimate it from other gases and report a number labeled eCO2, which is often wrong. An NDIR sensor measures carbon dioxide directly. Leave it by the bed for a full night and look at the peak, not the reading when you walk in.
A hygrometer for humidity. Many carbon dioxide monitors include one.
Take readings for a few nights, with the door open and closed, with a window cracked and shut. The pattern will usually be obvious within a week. It is the same approach I used for electrical fields in the bedroom EMF audit: measure first, then change only what the numbers justify.
What to fix, in order
- Ventilate first. Crack a window or leave the bedroom door open. If your heating and cooling system has a fan setting, running it overnight moves air through the room. This alone solves the carbon dioxide problem for most people.
- Fix humidity second. Aim for roughly 40 to 50 percent.
- Deal with the bedding. Covers, hot washes, pets out.
- Add a purifier last, and only if you have an allergen, dust or smoke problem that the first three steps did not solve.
There is a real tension in step one. An open window can let in noise, light and heat, and each of those costs sleep too.
