The Bedroom EMF Audit: What to Measure, What to Move, What to Ignore
"EMF" has become one word that people use for about five different things, which is why the conversation around it is such a mess. One person means the wifi router. Another means the wiring in the wall. Another means their phone. They are not the same, they are not measured the same way, and they do not call for the same response.
So rather than argue about whether EMF is dangerous, let me do something more useful: walk you through the audit I run on a bedroom, what I actually change, and what I deliberately ignore.
The four things people mean by EMF
Radio frequency, or RF. This is wireless communication. Wifi, cell signal, Bluetooth, cordless phone bases, smart meters, baby monitors. It is the one most people are thinking of.
Magnetic fields. Produced by current flowing. Strongest near breaker panels, wiring runs, motors, transformers, and anything drawing real power. Falls off fast with distance.
Electric fields. Present whenever a wire is energised, even with nothing switched on. Bedside lamp cords, extension leads, wiring in the wall behind the headboard.
Dirty electricity. High frequency noise riding on top of the normal 60 hertz power, thrown off by dimmers, LED drivers, and switching power supplies. I wrote a whole piece on that one in dirty electricity and sleep, so I will not repeat it here.
They need different meters and different fixes. That matters, because most people buy one meter, get a reading they cannot interpret, and either panic or give up.
Where the evidence actually stands
I want to be straight with you before you spend money.
For the levels found in ordinary homes, the major public health bodies have not established health effects from RF or from typical residential magnetic fields. There is research showing biological effects in some settings, there is a large body of clinical anecdote, and there are people who report they sleep better with less of it. There is not the kind of large, repeated, controlled human evidence that would settle the argument.
So I treat this the way I treat any unsettled biohack. It is measurable, most of the fixes are free, and the whole thing is reversible. That makes it a reasonable experiment. It does not make it the first thing to fix. If your room is warm, bright at night, and you go to bed at a different hour every day, no amount of shielding will rescue your sleep. Get the big levers right first.
The other reason I like this audit is that most of what it finds is not really about fields at all. Half the wins are "there is a glowing, buzzing, notifying device 18 inches from your head," and that is worth fixing regardless of what you believe about radio waves.
Distance is the whole game
If you remember one thing, remember this. Field strength falls off very fast with distance. Doubling your distance from a source cuts the exposure to roughly a quarter. Move something across the room and you have done more than almost any product will do for you.
That is why my audit is mostly about moving things, and only occasionally about buying things.
The audit, step by step
1. Measure first. Walk the bedroom with a meter before you change anything and write the numbers down. Without a baseline you cannot tell whether anything you do afterwards helps. I keep a dirty electricity meter for the wiring side, and it takes about ten minutes to walk a room.
2. Start at the head of the bed. This is where you spend eight hours with your skull in one spot, so it is where readings matter most. Check the wall behind the headboard. If the breaker panel, the fridge, or a major appliance sits on the other side of that wall, move the bed. This is the single highest value finding in most homes and it costs nothing.
3. Clear the nightstand. Charging phone, charging watch, tablet, cordless phone base, clock radio with a transformer, LED lamp with a driver in the base. All of it is within arm's reach of your head all night. Move charging to a dresser across the room, or better, out of the bedroom.
4. The phone. Airplane mode, or out of the room entirely. Mine sleeps in another room, and I will be honest that I did that for the notifications and the light long before I thought about radio waves. It remains the single best change I have made to my own bedroom.
5. The router. Get it out of the bedroom and out of the wall shared with the bed. Then put it on a plug timer so it switches off overnight and comes back before the alarm. Nobody needs wifi at 3 am, and if your household objects, that itself is worth a conversation.
6. Wired where it is easy. Ethernet to the desk and the television is not a sacrifice, it is faster. This is not a purity exercise. It is picking the free wins.
7. Electric blankets and heated mattress pads. If you use one, warm the bed and then unplug it at the wall before you get in. Not switched off, unplugged, because an energised cord still produces an electric field. This one surprises people.
8. Smart meter and neighbours. If the smart meter is mounted on the outside of your bedroom wall, move the bed to another wall. You cannot control the meter, and again, distance does the work. Same logic applies to a neighbour's router through a shared wall in an apartment.
9. Then, and only then, consider a product. After you have moved what moves and unplugged what unplugs, re measure. If the numbers are still high, that is when filters or shielding earn their place, and you will know exactly which outlet or which wall to target rather than guessing. For the wiring noise I use Greenwave filters, and for travel and general use I carry a Waveguard.
10. Re measure and write it down. Same outlets, same meter, same time of day. If a change did not move a number, undo it. Keeping things you cannot justify is how this turns from an experiment into a superstition.
What I ignore
I do not use shielding paint or bed canopies. They can be done well, but done badly they trap and reflect fields rather than remove them, and they are difficult to verify without proper equipment. If you are going that far, hire someone with a full meter kit rather than buying it off the shelf.
I do not worry about the microwave, because I am not standing next to it for eight hours.
I do not chase readings in rooms I do not sleep in. The bedroom is where the exposure time is. Everywhere else is rounding error.
And I do not treat any of this as more important than light, temperature, and a consistent schedule, because it is not.
Run it as a two week test
Measure the room. Change nothing else about your sleep. Score how you feel on waking, 1 to 5, for a week. Then do the audit, re measure, and score another week. If the second week is clearly better, you have your answer for your house. If nothing changed, you spent an evening and learned something real.
