Dirty Electricity and Sleep: What It Is, How to Measure It, and What I Actually Do About It

If you have ever plugged a meter into a bedroom outlet and watched the number jump, you already know why people ask me about dirty electricity. Greenwave filters and dirty electricity meters are two of the most searched things on this site, and the questions are always the same. What is it, is it real, does it touch sleep, and what do I actually do about it in my own house.

Here is my honest answer, in the order I would want it if I were the one asking.

What dirty electricity actually is

The power in your walls is supposed to be a clean 60 hertz wave. In practice it is not. Anything in your home that chops, dims, converts, or switches that power adds high frequency noise on top of the wave. Engineers call it high frequency voltage transients, or line noise. Most people call it dirty electricity.

The usual suspects are the small power supplies that run almost everything now: phone chargers, laptop bricks, LED bulbs and their drivers, dimmer switches, variable speed motors in fridges and washers, solar inverters, and anything with a wall wart. Each one adds a little. Together they can add a lot, and the noise rides the wiring through every room, including the one you sleep in.

That is the physics, and nobody disputes it. Whether it affects a human body is where the argument starts.

Can you measure it

Yes, and this is the part I like, because it turns a vague worry into a number. A plug in dirty electricity meter reads the noise on an outlet in millivolts (some brands read in their own units). You walk the house, plug into each outlet, and write down what you see. Bedrooms with a lot of electronics, LED strips, or dimmers usually read highest. Rooms with an inverter or a big appliance on the same circuit can read very high.

The Greenwave meter is the one I keep in the house. It is simple, it reads fast, and it lets you see the effect of any change immediately. Unplug the phone charger, the number drops. Swap a dimmer for a plain switch, the number drops. Plug in a filter, the number drops. You are no longer guessing.

Does it affect sleep

Here is where I want to be straight with you, because I would rather you trust me than agree with me.

The research on dirty electricity and health is limited, most of the studies are small, and the mainstream position from public health bodies is that no health effect has been established at the levels found in homes. There is a body of clinical anecdote, some of it from physicians, describing improved sleep, fewer headaches, and better mood after filtering, and there are a few small studies pointing in that direction. There is not the kind of large, repeated, controlled evidence that would settle it.

So how do I think about it? The same way I think about a lot of biohacking. It is measurable, it is cheap, it is fully reversible, and the downside of trying it is close to zero. That makes it a good experiment. It does not make it a first lever. Light, temperature, and timing are the first levers, and they move sleep for everyone. If your bedroom is bright at night, warm, and you go to bed at a different time every day, no filter will save you. Fix those first. Then run the experiment.

What I do in my own home

I measure before I buy anything. Every outlet in the bedroom, plus the outlets in the rooms that share the same circuit. I write the numbers down so I can compare later.

I remove sources before I filter. Chargers come out of the bedroom outlets at night, or move to a power strip I switch off. Dimmers in the bedroom become plain switches. LED strips and smart bulbs move out or get unplugged at the wall, not just switched off at the app.

Then I filter the outlets that are still high. Greenwave filters plug straight into the outlet and shunt the high frequency noise. I put them where the meter says, not where a chart says, and I re measure. Two or three usually bring a normal bedroom down a lot. Some rooms need more, some need none.

I put the router on a timer. It goes off around bedtime and comes back before the alarm. Not because of dirty electricity specifically, but because it is one more thing broadcasting into the room where I am trying to sleep, and I do not need it at 2 am.

The phone sleeps in another room. This one has nothing to do with wiring and everything to do with light and attention, and it does more for my sleep than any filter.

When I travel I carry a small Waveguard device and I do not pretend it replaces the steps above. Hotels are what they are.

How to run your own two week test

  1. Measure the bedroom outlets and note the numbers.
  2. Change nothing else about your sleep for the test. Same bedtime, same wake time, same room temperature.
  3. Track how you feel on waking for one week with the room as it is. A simple 1 to 5 score is enough.
  4. Remove the sources, then filter what is left. Re measure so you know it actually changed.
  5. Track the second week the same way.

If the second week is clearly better and the numbers clearly dropped, you have your answer for your house. If nothing changed, you spent very little and you learned something, and the filters can go to a friend who wants to try.

The bottom line

Dirty electricity is real as an electrical phenomenon and unsettled as a health question. Measuring it costs almost nothing, filtering it costs a little, and both are reversible. That is a good profile for an experiment, not for a religion. Get the big levers right first, then test this one honestly and let your own sleep tell you what it thinks.
